why do french lorries have stickers on the back i.e 60 70 80 or 80 90 100

As far as I know, it to show what their speed limits are on various roads to remind the 'irate' car drivers behind why he is driving slowly. Some UK trucks similarly have written on the back "40mph limit on single carriageway". However, just like the UK, the French don't often stick to the limit!
