Was Ricky Gervais performance pathetic?

I thought Ricky Gervais's performance on the Princess Diana Concert absolutely Pathetic.
Call himself a comedian when he could not ad-lib for 3 minutes. What makes this man so popular, he could not stand tall (ecuse the pun) against any of the old time comedians, they made their living out of ad-libing.
His joke about Prince Harry being in the Army (did he not also know that Prince William is also in the army) was rather ironic, the gist of it was that a fellow soldier had been shot in the leg and he requested Prince Harry to call for the Medics, Prince Harry called out Medic,Medic get over here and on the way pick up this chaps balls. Ha. Ha bl00dy Ha.. The only time Prince Harry will be that close to flying lead, is when he goes fly fishing.
Also worthy of note was the fact that both the Princes could not remember the very short speach they made or even the names of some of their mother's favourite artists, without constantly refering to their small crib sheets that they held in the palms of their hands. Nice but dim springs to mind.

I also thought the princes would have been able to remember what little they did say.
What made me laugh was all the hangers on and hoorah Henry's in the "Royal Box" you could see them guffawing and being quite pathetic.
Thought some of the artists weren't on long enough and others on far too long. The sound was atrocious and whoever did it should be sacked a few artists weren't heard or sounded awful due to the sound rather than their performance.

Ricky Gervais is a comedian - you either like his sense of humour or you don't but I believe it is grossly unfair to be so derogative towards the Princes. Of COURSE they are going to need prompt cards - think how 'pleasant' your question/statement would have been adding that they got tongue tied on stage as well??!
Remember what the concert was for - celebrating the life of their mother who's 46th birthday it would have been yesterday. It must have been phenomenally emotional for them. For maintaining their composure throughout deserves nothing but praise. It is wonderful to have had a concert to celebrate rather than commiserate for a change and Diana stood for a lot of wonderful causes in her time.
Very poor taste to disrespect them and the "nice but dim" statement - pathetic.
