I've just signed up to BT Total broadband, but in order to download the online protection including Norton Antivirus etc... I need 256 MB RAM. According to my laptop I have 224MB is there anything I can do e.g. removing programs to increase my RAM?

Your laptop has 256mb of RAM with 32mb of it allocated to the onboard graphics leaving a nett amount available of 224mb.
The only way to increase this is to physically add another memory module.
Even 256mb is too low to run Windoze XP adequately so any addition would be very beneficial.
I would strongly recommend you do NOT use Norton - it is a dreadful resource hogger, and with 256 mb RAM your machine will really slow down. There are plenty of free programs equally good (I think better) and particularly recommend the following:

Firewall - Comodo
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Antivirus - Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Spyware - Spywareblaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster .html

and Spybot - update and run once a week or so

All of these are free, run well together, and apart from Spybot run continuously in the background, with automatic updates.

What Ethel says!
if you go to http://www.orcalogic.co.uk/asp/memoryfinder.as p?ft=m&st=1 and enter your laptop details, it will tell you what memory module you need.
