what are the conditions like? I work in an air conditioned office, but luckily i sit by a window and my plants are doing very well. I mist them a couple of times a week and give a liquid house plant feed once a week and they are all really healthy. (they were only from B&Q, so nothing special)
in a really dark corner we have a calathea rufibarb....it is also doing well given it gets no natural light. The underside of the leaves feel like velvet, so everyone gives it a little stroke as they walk past!!
My advice is just buy what you like and give it a go!!

What about the good old Spider Plant. Supposed to be good at cleansing the air, is easy to keep (mine thrives on neglect) looks good and is cheap to buy.
