I have recieved many sympathey cards from friends and colleagues for the passing of my mum. What is the normal etiquette for this, do I thank them for their cards?
Also, when someone is to say 'I am sorry about your mum'.. what do I say?

When people say sorry, just thank them.
At first it used to start me off crying, but it is nice to know people care.
I am sorry to hear about your Mum and can imagine what you must be going through. My Mum has been dead now for 18 months and it's still hard.
I talk out loud to her and to her pictures hoping she can hear!

I am sorry to hear of your loss.
It may be nice to send out identical 'thank you' notes to everyone who sent a card, but it's not essential in this day and age.
The standard response to a verbal expression of sympathy is a simple 'Thank you'. You should then try and pick up the conversation because the other person will be worried in case they have upset you, and will be waiting for your response.
