The Atkins diet is not harmful for Diabetics because it does not include High Glycemic Carbohydrates which can cause an Insulin spike. Instead it keeps Insulin down and Growth Hormone up, keeping you younger looking and giving you more energy for longer. If you eat sweet (high Glycemic) carbohydrates, you crave more and feel hungry quickly afterwards, it also makes your growth hormone fall (when one is up, the other is down - like a see-saw). Leeds university have been researching this for a long time, the Atkins diet was a good start point, but Leeds University have it perfected. I'm sure if you look into in on the web you will find an up-to-date page somehwere.
Why do so many people say Atkins and Atkinson in the same breath? As far as I can see they are completely different diets - one based on reducing carbs, the other based on stimulating the thyroid with dead sea kelp. The question posed in this thread concerned the "Atkinson" diet, but the first response refers to the "Atkins" diet. Personally, I think that the Atkins diet has more credibility and sounds safer than the Atkinson diet. Comments welcome!
