I have noticed a strange sound coming from somewhere in the field at the back of my house. The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like the noise that you can make when you blow on a blade of grass between your thumbs. It lasts for only a second but it repeats every 5-10 seconds. Could it be some type of bird calling? I heard it yesterday evening as well when it sounded as if something similar was calling back from further away but I can't hear the second one this evening. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks for your answers rasmus and tiggerwoo but the noise is constant ie every 6 seconds or so for the last 3 hours and it is more like a high-pitched squeak.
I don't think foxes call like that at least it doesn't match these descriptions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox
I stand very much corrected - thanks for your link ethel - it sounds just like what is described as a 'young fox crying'.
The wikipedia link put me off your excellent suggestions rasmus and tiggerwoo.
Should I be worried? Is this normal? Has the poor little thing been abandoned? I heard it all yesterday evening and tonight as well. Was the other sound maybe the mother/father or maybe another baby?
All info greatfully received.
Sounds most definately like foxes leave them well alone , mother fox will not abandon her own......but they will be left while mum goes hunting.
Can put the willy s up you sometimes though ,to me they sound like a toddler screaming very unnerving : 0
Undoubtadly this is not a fox what it is, is definitely a Pheasant. They make a sound as if you are holding a blade of grass between your palms and blowing
