It actually depends on the store, just like in the UK.
I recently spent a few months in the US and found that I had to try all clothes on as the sizes were so varied, not only in every store but also in every state. In one store in San Diego I got a pair of jeans in a size 10 but I had to buy a size 14 in a store in Alaska (I'm a UK 14).
