I decided to check it out and the earliest-recorded use of it was in a book by C Monckton called 'Some Experiences of a New Guinea Resident Magistrate' - they don't make 'em with titles like that any more either - published in 1920. The relevant sentence reads: "You have a big boil on your sit-upon"...really.
