Are there any controls on your monitor? Most have a few buttons across the bottom with which you can adjust the contrast, brightness & picture geometry.

right-click anywhere on desktop>properties>settings>advanced> then you should find a tab for the gfx area - in there somewhere is brightness and gamma settings.tweaking these will bring your brightness up. some games play very dark on my pc(doom3 especially-i know its meant to be dark but its ridiculous!) - but now i turn up the gamma each time before i play and all is fine. hope this helps
