Nice is a great place, the only minuse I found was the price of drinks, a round of drinks ( 2 large beers and 2 wines ) in most bars came to about 24.
Nice is OK but it is a large metropolitan area with bags of traffic. Nice central pedistrian area with plenty of different eating places. Cannes just down the coast I find more pleasant and tourist friendly but this can be costly (as can everywhere until you settle down and find the right places) Monaco is busy, small and pricy but worth a visit (on the train - parking is impossible) and Menton just North near the Italian border is very pleasant as resorts go. Inland, you have medieval towns and villages like Eze, Mougins and Grasse, good to visit - check the guidebooks.
If you go here you will find a quick one page guide toa lot of the places along the Riviera.
Try going up towards our apartment's area - Theoule Sur Mer, Mandelieu, Cannes, St Raphael - it's a little quieter and there are some of the best (free) beaches along this coastline.

Nice is a good place, but the shopping (avenue Jean Medecin is not brilliant).
The old town is nice, but as said the whole place can be a little expensive.

I used to live in Antibes which is lovely - strongly recommended but the beaches get very crowded in August!

It has an old town surrounded by the old walls, a marina, some great restaurants and a Provencal market.
Antibes is about 30 mins max from Nice. A taxi from Nice would set you back a bit, otherwise you can get the 'Navette' coach shuttle, hire a car or the train would be the best way.
From Antibes you are then about 20 mins from Cannes and can also drive to Mougins, St Paul de Vence all within about 30 mins.
