I tested my smoke alarm yesterday and immediately after it started that sporadic beeping. I thought maybe the battery was old so I changed it, but as soon as a new one was put in, it started beeping again! You know, the beeping that tells you the battery is low! How come? Is the machine bust?

Hi Scarlett, if it is more than about 2 years old, ditch it and but a new one. some of them do become ultra sensitive.Ray
Have you had any major dust shifting episodes or replastering done that can set 'em off. If not I agree with Ray. Small cost for the important job it does for us all.

I have hoovered mine before - by wafting the nozzle of hoover in general area when it was open but with a pop sock over the end to see if any bits flew off it, also did a ciggie, and a separate steam test under it before ' trusitng ' it again.
