is there anyway to access relatives medical records from 50+ years ago

i think this would depend on what type of record you mean, if it is a hiospital one then it would depend on the extent and capoabilities , not to mention policies, of their archive, for example see this link:

I got a copy of my great-grandad's medical records from 1935. They were held at the County Records Office and they had to write to the relevant Health Authority to get permission for me to see them.
I would be astounded if any were held that long.

How did Cheeky chops get to know that some health records were held in the Local Office ?
I have to say I am surprised they ended up there.

BUT
The New England Journal had a historical article on the first fella to be given insulin way back in 1930 somehting because his notes turned up somewhere

Then a few years later they had Pt no 1 at mass general - that was 1822 by the way - because the admission book for that decade turned up

but as you can see it is mainly by chance
