Author of a Book

Some time ago I read a novel called 'London' but can't remember the author's name. Can anyone help? The story revolves around the city and starts at the very beginning with a Stone Age(?) settlement and follows the family line through different ages ie Roman, Middle Age etc right up to the late 20thC.
