doing a logo for a website and dont want a white background - want it to be transparent - is it enough to save it as a gif in Illustrator??

And no, it's not enough to just save it as a gif. Save the logo as an ai file (i.e., a vector-based image format, not raster), and just design the logo with no background. Even though the background on screen is white, it should be transparent (it is by default anyway).

I wasn't trying to be too harsh.
You'll be better using a proper designer's forum though, with many more people that specialise in this sort of thing.
