When and, more importantly, why did Bombay become Mumbai

You may not be aware of this, but Bombay was called Mumbai before the British came to India and found it difficult to pronounce and hence changed it to Bombay. More than 50 years after India's independence, there has been a trend to revert back to the original names of cities. Hope this answers your question.

thanks - it does. i thought that must be the reason but they're rather slow in changing the names back, aren't they? like you say it's 50 years since independence.
