The traditional whicker basket for passenger occupancy comes in different sizes, depending on the size of the balloon envelope. Commercial operators have balloons that can seat (or stand) three or four passengers, all the way up to 10 or 12, at least here in the U.S. The balloon and the pilot's are certificated (licensed in the U.K.) just like airplane pilots, and as such, both are required to undergo periodic inspections. A respectable operator will provide you with evidence of the ballons inspection history as well as the pilot's licensing status. While I view them with somewhat of a jaundiced eye, they can provide an extremely satisfying experience. The best time of the day for the ride is early morning (well before sunrise) or evening. You'll be amazed at how much you can hear coming from the ground, even at 1,000 feet altitude or better... Enjoy!
