HOw long after its BB date is it ok to use a sealed jar of cook in sauce. Someone told me it would keep for years but I have one a good few months out of date, and am wondering whether it would have lost any of its original taste/consistency

It could also be poisonous, chuck it out and buy another one!!!!
Question Author
why would it be poisonous??
Open it and if you think it's off bin it .
When something goes off it can release toxins!!!
an out of date sealed jar is a bit like men, when passed its sell by date, get a new one
fine, thanks!! have you reached your sell by date??

I'm still in my prime, life begins at forty!!!!!!

I must have my bladder flushed, my catheter is starting to smell!!!!!
I'd throw it away, but thats just me.

There will be nothing wrong with it however, food with a Best Before date can be eaten after that date has passed, this is definatelty true of canned and bottled stuff as long as it has not been opened. Best Before is simply a guide to say that before this date the food will be of top quality yet after it is likely to less than perfect.

Just as an example, we had some green tea bags in the cupboard at work, we were all using them and for no other reason than I was waiting for the kettle to boil I looked at the date, they were over a year past thier best before date.

chuck it, I know jam doesnt go off, even if it gets mouldy you can scoop bit of mould of and eat the rest as its sugar
Question Author
But that's only if the jam is opened 4getmenot, this is unopened
just bin it ?
Bin it!!!!!!
ie. discard the jar, take a swab from the tip of the catheter!
I'd use it :-)
me too a few months is ok, years well then i'd probably chuck it.
Best before are used to cover their backs, there were no best before dates when i was a kid, a bottle of tomato ketchup would be in my Nan's cupboard for years. Now its all refridgerate and best before dates.

Check the lid though make sure it isn't blown it also should make a nice pop when you open it, if not bin it!
It'll be fine as long as the seal on the lid is intact. Forget the nanny-state.
