What age did you fly the nest..?

A question posted yesterday about a 24yr old with a mortgage got me thinking that I was his age when I first moved out my parents and got my own place. However it was the late 80's and getting a mortgage and buying property was pretty easy back then. So how old was you when you decided to take the plunge and move out of your parents house and go it alone as a tennent or owner? With rising house prices and difficulties getting onto the property ladder these days are we staying with our parents for longer?

I left home at 16. I have a brill family but as one of 10 kids in a 3 bed semi it was crowded to say the least! I started out in a bedsit and it was the first time I'd ever slept in a bed on my own! From the age of 16 I never had less than 3 jobs on the go at once, and bought my first house on my own (for �1,800 cash!) at 22.

i was 16 when i left home and moved several hundred miles away. and crossroads a friend of mine who i grew up with still lives at home with his mam and he is 50,he's not a mommys boy, has a relationship with a lovely woman and is in a fantastic job, so age doesnt mean anything

My brother is 19 and he is planning on leaving home (and taking me with him) any time soon.

My mother died when I was 17 so I lived with my sister for a few months until I was 18 then I bought a cottage for �2,000 and had two jobs to pay the mortgage.

I moved out 5 months ago - at 23 - bought a house with my b/f. Loving having our own place but i miss my 4 younger brothers so much - used to having them around!

Independence is great though and i'm glad we waited to get a mortgage rather than rent.....

I left 'the nest' when I was 17 - thanks to my late father who left me well provided for after his death in 1977 which made me very fortunate to purchase my own house....what a buzz having my own place all to myself ! What a feeling...

Hi Annie, I'm actually Galloway born n bred but there's not a lot of work to be had down there apart from farming, trades, fishing or working in shops! Also, weekends tend to consist of getting so drunk you barely make it home and if you're lucky getting in a fight with somebody you didn't get on with at school, your girlfriend's ex or the battering the poor soul that was sick on your shoes!
