Rising youth R&B star Tarver first began performing live at the age of eight, and within five years had secured a major label recording deal with Virgin Records. Tarver, who is managed by Chris Stokes (also behind US teen phenomenons Immature with whom Tarver also toured), made his debut in April 1996 with "It's You That's On My Mind", a highly stylized, commercial R&B record aimed squarely at adolescent audiences. It was followed later in the year by Tarver's debut album, which appealed across the American teen market but was harshly considered by critics.
