Since having a service which did not include air con I have a nasty smell when first switching on the air con or normal heater?blower on cold.Does this mean the air con may need service?The smell goes Quickly.

The first thing to check is the pollen filter, it might not have been changed in the service.
A/C systems do get a bit smelly due to water left in the evaporator and a build up of bacteria.

To get rid of it you need to get the system sanitised/deodorised, there are many different methods of doing it, you can buy an aerosol which you put inside the car with all the windows closed, and the a/c on recirculation. Basically the vapour it produces gets taken back into the system and circulated around the car.

I cleaned the Aircon on my Corsa last week - as Rojam says get an aerosol from the dealers and put the air con on Max Recirc and depress the aerosol button inside the car which epmties it completely while it recirculates the stuff and cleans the system - all dooors and windows have to be closed and vacate the car while cleaning it.

Thanks for answers.I have done the aerosol bit but am not sure where the pollen filter is located.You may be aware that there is no Haynes type manual printed for the 2004 model for me to check any thing .Any body know if a book exists for home diy?

The pollen filter is located in the engine bay, set into the bulkhead underneath where the wipers are.
