exterior artex

i am bricking up a window but the exterior of my house has what i can only describe as 'artex' render on it, can anybody tell me what its called and how do i apply it? it looks like its been put on with a heavy pile decorators roller, but thats a guess!!

I cant remember what its called but it is render that is flicked on with a hand operated device and its hard work, you can hire them from hire shops.

In which case it is often known as spatter coat, and it is applied using a spatter gun. There are various sorts of surface finishes.
