Decoding stuff

I am trying to save (a) pictures and (b) Inbox and Sent Items to disk to transfer to a new computer. But when I examine what I have saved it is all in code - both pictures and e-mails.
If were to e-mail any of these items to a friend he would get them as normal texts/pictures. How come I can't save them as such?
Help, please.

You don't mention what email system you're using.

Sorry, fo3nix. I use Outlook Express. And, ncidentally, the pictures that come out coded are also from an e-mail.
