I've just bought a new computer and transferred my music from the old PC via DVD. I now can't transfer the purchased iTunes music on to my iPod and didn't realise that I could do this via the iPod & its too late because I have synchronised my iPod up to my library & it has erased the purchased music from my iPod. Does anyone know if there is anyway around this, the purchased music is still in my library so I haven't lost it from there

You need to authorise that computer to play your music too. This should be an option in the Advanced menu in iTunes, though it may be slightly different (I'm using a Mac here).

Then just copy your music across, including the protected music presumably, and it should play in iTunes and let you copy it to your iPod.
You can try Tansee iPod Transfer which can backup songs and videos in iPod to PC, copy iPod songs and videos to new ipod, computer or notebook.
