They lived virtually next door to 2 other families from hesse , Darmstadt, called Linhard and Sachs by the way. plus, they were all tailors by trade, which is interesting. The sachs and linards had older children all born in maryland in the early 1850s.
Found a Solomon Stern from Hesse darmstadt in 1880 living in Pennsylvania, his eldest son shown was born in the late1850s in Pennsylvania.
Interestingly, another casper steuernagles os shown on the US 1880 census living in Cincinatti Ohio, born Hdstadt, about 1812, mother and father's birthplace is given as H.D.St, (this was a category on the census that was to be added to the return for every person recorded) living with casper is his grandmother, Eliza Foellger. also born H.S. St, and aged 90, (born about 1790).
another family appears in 1880 US census in New Jersey, this is the family of john, born 1847, hessen a baker, John's wife was born in New Jersey but her father and mother were from Baden and so she was US born.
In all, it looks as though the name came to the US in the early to mid 1850s.
