If I send someone a 'message' on Facebook, is it private between them and me, or can other people view it?

Also, what is the significance of 'poking' someone?

Messages can only be seen by you and the recipient, and no notification is made in your news feed about the fact you have sent a message.

This is what Facebook themselves say about Poke:
'A poke is a way to interact with your friends on Facebook. When we created the poke, we thought it would be cool to have a feature without any specific purpose. People interpret the poke in many different ways, and we encourage you to come up with your own meanings.'
