Its in the Midlands!
Well, it's certainly closer to Southampton than it is to Berwick so...if you're determined it has to be either in the north or the south...it's certainly in the south. However, as Slim says, it's usually allocated to "the Midlands"...neither t'one nor t'other.
East Midlands.
North of Watford gap = The North
Moog is right. There are only 2 regions -north and south. The midlands is part of the north.
Anywhere north of London is in the North. Anywhere south of London is Country-Bumpkin-Land.
The Midlands is an entity of its own. No Midlander would say they were Northern. They do sound more Northern though, it's the flat vowels I reckon.
No.
Apart from anything else, it depends on where you are looking from. For a Glaswegian, Leicester is certainly in the south whereas Inverness is in the north.

It's not the case that there are only two regions, even just within England. Wasn't there a plan at one time for a vote to be taken on whether there would be "regional" assemblies in the north-east, north-west, Humberside etc? It is also inconceivable that Cornwall is in the same "region" as Kent.

There still is a plan to have a referendum on whether to have a devolved assembly for the North East - in November I think. Plans for North West and for Yorkshire have been delayed until 2005 because of concerns about all-postal voting.
