What is the diference between a hard drive memoruy and a flash drive? I would like to buy a device that will hold most of my CD collection, but also want it to be easy to access and portable.

I take it you mean mp3 players?
As a general rule hard drive units are more expensive (over �100) but tend to hold a lot more songs.
Solid state mp3 players are cheaper but hold fewer tunes (assuming the same compression level). They tend to be more robust as there are no moving parts and battery life can be longer.
For ease of use many people find the Apple ipod great and they come in a range of sizes upto 80Gb but they aren't cheap (�238)

Thanks, but i was mainly asking what the difference is between the memory options. BY more robust, do you mean that the flashdrive doesn't jump if being used when moving.

Its not so much as jumping (like a cd player) more like hard drive failure esp. if its dropped or handled roughly.
I think the largest memory flash mp3 player I've seen is 8Gb but the largest hard drive is 80Gb, ten times as much.

So the would the hard drive be ok to walk around with or use in the car? Or would it be safer to have less memory if I want it to be portable?

Absolutley fine for normal everyday use that's what they were designed for. It's just if you like to go jogging or doing some sort of activity and you accidentally drop it. That's the sort of thing which may break a hard drive version but less likely to damage a flash drive.

How many CDs do you have?

The largest flash-based iPod only stores 8GB of data. If you have a sizable CD collection, this will be nowhere near enough.
