Freud's view that the point of his procedures was to replace 'hysterical misery' with 'common unhappiness' is frequently quoted.

But no case is hopeless unless treated as such, and even the most severe disturbances can be brought under control. Early in his career, Freud said that the aim of the psychoanalysis was `to replace hysterical misery with common unhappiness, in other words to become able to take part in real life with all its ups and downs. Freud also expressed a more optimistic view that analysis could help a person who is unhappy, neurotic, torn by conflicts or socially inhibited to develop `harmony, peace of mind and efficiency.
