We've all heard the expression Once In a Blue Moon but what is it? Is it very rare? When is the next one?

In recent times a blue moon is the second of two full moons to occur in the same calendar month.

The older meaning of blue moon was the third full moon in a quarter of the year when there were four full moons normally a quarter year has three full moons.

I'm sure the others are right, but I recall a real blue moon about 50 years ago. There had been a major series of forest fires in Eastern USA, and the high level smoke gave us a pure blue moon for several days.
