The Perec is by far the better - his biography is well worth reading too (and his other novel Life; a user's guide - I think that's the translation anyway).

You may also be interested in a novel called Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn - which 'loses a letter' every chapter as each letter falls off a statue in the town sqaure. It's excellent.
