Marks on Oak stairs

HI I have some white marks on my oak staircase, which wont go even when using proprietary cleaner for the job, has anyone any ideas on how to shift or disguise these marks?I dont know what caused thema sthey were not apparent when i bought this house a few months ago.

Do they look like a white version of the black marks left by shoes? If so try one of those high density sponges and rubbing to get rid ... they can be made by rubber soled slippers.

upon closer inspection, Sadly no, It looks as though a splallage which may be caustic has partly "melted" the surface.The marks have only become apparent since i have washed the stairs, with a recomended product...so i think they were there before i moved in.
If i was to guess the cause , i would hazard that nailpolish remover had been spilt, not product i have in the house, but perhaps a visitor?
I will try your suggestion tho'
