Where to live in Manchester?

My boyfriend and I are going to be moving to Manchester at the end of the year and as we are not too familiar with the area we are looking for some advise as where is the best place to rent. We were thinking about the City Centre area as neither of us drive and as i will be transfering through my work i will be based in the city centre its self.
We would really appreciate any advise regarding the best areas to stay, deansgate and salford are also places we have had mentioned to us, what do you think?

Unless you're a millionaire, forget Deansgate.
Unless you're a drug-dealing, car-stealing hoodie, forget Salford.
Your best bet would be along the Wilmslow Road corridor: Rusholme, Fallowfield, Withington, Didsbury. There are zillions of students in these areas so there are plenty of amenities available, and it is the busiest bus route in Europe so being car-less is not a disadvantage.

Salford is a city in its own right and I think it's a bit much to label all of it as being inhabited by drug dealers etc. However, I do agree that Didsbury is a good place to start. Chorlton isn't bad either.

my mate moved down there from glasgow a while back.he's living in stretford.i've been down a few times and seems a nice area and not to far from town by tram or a tenner in a cab.

money's not really a problem and would probably pay about �700PCM for the right location! We both have pretty good jobs and the likelyhood is that we will both be based in the city centre for work anyway!

I lived in the Northern Quarter for a year and I couldn't fault it. This was about 3 years ago now and back then there was loads of work going on there, and from visiting since, I know that that whole area has now become very popular. Our apartment which was 2 good sized double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large open plan living room and kitchen with balcony, security gates & video phone entry, the lot, was �750pcm back then, so now this may well have gone up a bit. Location-wise, it is perfect - less than 5 minutes walk to Selfridges / Deansgate area, 5/10 minutes walk to Piccadilly....everything on your doorstep....good job you don't drive, as parking is a bit of a nightmare....if I moved back to the city centre, I would move back there. Suburbs-wise, have lived in Didsbury and West Didsbury (prefer West) and have a friend who still lives in Chorlton....all of which are really nice areas in which to live...about 20-30 minutes bus ride into town, nice 'leafy streets' with all the shops, restaurants and bars you could possibly need (I sound like an estate agent here)....try rightmove.co.uk - that will have plenty of Manchester rental properties on there.

Can I add to this question. . .

I'm also moving to Manc soon, however... and this might sound mad to some people... the 'really nice', 'leafy streets' element doesnt turn me on so much; I'm 22 and moving to Manchester for the music scenes, the buzz & the 'real' people. Coin-wise I'm low-income so I'm not looking for the luxury aspect anyway. I'm nt sure about studenty areas either.

What humble but buzzing + not-too-dodgy areas might suit me??
