what is the name of the children's book that is about 2 boys in china. the oldest son has a very long name and the second son has a short name. the oldest son falls into a well.

I think the book is 'Tikki Tikki Tembo' by Arlene Mosel. The elder child was called something like 'Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Chari Bari Muchi Pip Peri Pembo', which meant 'The greatest thing in the whole wide world', and the younger child was called 'Chang', which meant 'Little, or nothing'. The story is about how the older child almost dies when he falls into the well, and so much time is wasted in saving him through having to repeat his name. The fable ends by saying 'that is why people in China have short names now instead of great big long ones'. Yvonne

Yes, that's the book. My husband just got it from the library for our son, and as soon as they brought it home, memories of reading it as a child flooded back...
