Hi, I know somebody who's car failed its MOT On 12 small things, their car is now SORN, so does this mean: no MOT, invalid tax and insurance? Trust me that I dont condone what he is doing and Ive told him I will report him if he does not sort it ASAP. What will happen to him if he is found out? Thanks.

Im not sure about the invalid tax and insurance he will get points and probably a ban.
I am sure the insurance will be invalid as the car has to have an MOT certificate to be insured?

According to the DVLA he could be fined & imprisoned.

Thank you for the answers. I cant believe he is being so stupid, he will lose his job but my main concern is him running someone over or something. This is so unlike him what he is doing.
Do you know what the 12 ''small things'' are?

The garage which done the MOT would be duty bound to report him if he dosen't get the ''small things'' repaired, he dosen't have to have them repaired at the garage where the car failed the MOT, but i believe he has to prove to them that the said work has been carried out, once his tax disc expires he will not be able to get insurance due to not having a valid MOT certificate.

Maybe he cannot afford to repair his car, and he believes that having a tax disc & insurance at this present time will surfice until he gets it fixed.

Did the garage class the car as roadworthy?
You can't have a tax disc AND a SORN - it is one or the other.

He will get found out, that's for sure.

From the DVLA website:
"The maximum penalty for making a false declaration by declaring SORN when the vehicle is actually used or kept on a public road is 5000 and two years imprisonment"

He is saving for a house but he can afford the 200 it will cost to get the 12 small things sorted out. I feel really strongly about people doing the things that he is doing but he is in my family and I have always said I'd report anyone who did this sort of thing. I feel like Im between a rock and a hard place.
Tell him he'll get caught. All Police Forces now have specialist officers trained to use ANPR (automatic number plate register - or something like that!). The Police vehicles are often plain cars with a computer system which scans every car it sees (the officers don't have to select specific cars). This then links into the register which will tell them (in a matter of seconds) whether the vehicle has a MOT, is insured etc etc. Don't forget that with the Government targets that are set for Police Forces, there will be more and more ANPR vehicles on our roads over the next couple of years!
Hi Rachel, I know someone who had an accident when there were too many people in the car. That invalidated their insurance and an order was made against future earnings for the rest of their life in order to compensate the people injured. Now that's a very scary thought.
