When I brake sharply on a bumpy surface, I get a nasty grinding noise which can be felt in the brake pedal. Any idea why or if it's a problem? It's an 06 Seat Ibiza.

Sounds like the ABS kicking in.
first port of call would be to get the brake pads & brake discs checked out as these could be the quickest and first option

Cheers, I'd thought of ABS but I never really knew what it did...makes sense!

I've just re-read my last comment and it makes me sound like a retard! I knew what it did, but never experienced it, is what I think I mean.
when abs operates it releases the brakes and puts them back on again at a very quick rate. this will show in the brake pedal as a shuddering / pulsing. ( check them out on a tarmaced smooth road in the dry and do it carefully. don't get rear ended or crash !! )
if it was the abs kicking in on a bumpy / rough surface the grinding noise could be the tyres skidding and regripping the road surface.
