Absence makes the heart grow stronger?

How does this work? I find that the longer someone is away the more I get used to them not been there and then you start to forget what they look like and then forget about them altogether.

Agree with you, unless it is through death I rarely long for people who are absent from my life, for instance friends you at one point couldn't imagine not seeing again, you get to the point where you just don't miss them.
Also agree with 4getmenot that the saying doesn't mention whether it is a prolonged absence or not and I certainly miss people when I'm away only for a few days so in that sense the saying's true!

Regular jogs around your local park makes the heart grow stronger. Unless you have a heart condition in which case I wouldn't recommend it.
I don't think you permanently forget people though. At some point a friend, a piece of music, or a scent may jog your memory and you'll suddenly find yourself thinking, "I wonder what they're doing now...?"

Many people have partners who work abroad or need to be away from home for good lengths of time. This doesn't mean that you sit at home and forget about them! Depends on how long you're apart, and how much the person means to you. If you're talking about a simple acquaintance, old work mate, etc., then yes, time might let you move on from this person, although you rarely forget them altogether!
it is not stronger, it is fonder.
it relates to our memory - we often filter out all the negative stuff and hang onto the good stuff, so our memory of a time or occasion is often better than the reality - it also works the other way round too.
also if you spend a lot of time with someone you can become irritated by minor, day to day things that they do which can turn to resentment, but if they are not there as ofte this doesn't happen.
its also about missing someone and longing for them

I've been doing long distance with my girlfriend for nealrly 20 months now. At first it was unbearable.
We see each other every night via skype, and in person every 3-4 weeks. I miss her the minute she's left but get used to being on my own after a day or so. However, I'm beginning to agree with "Absence makes the heart grow stronger, but for too long it makes it wander" as as of late i'm thinking 'what's the point!'

Well, I guess Kind of...
But I think it makes you apprieciate the other person way more, than you would've done living close together. Alot my friend feel it's a chore to go and see their boyfriends for a few hours, who only live across the road.
I've been in long distance relationship for 9 months, and I'd kill to see my boyfriend as regularly as they do.
I guess used to him not being there after a couple of weeks, but I still hate being without him, and no, I don't think, if you truly loved someone that much, you'd wander or forget about them.
