Spanish Supermarkets

Does anyone know how Spanish supermarkets would be equivalent to English ones, e.g. which would be like a Sainsburys and which would be like an Asda in terms of price, etc.?

We have a house in southern spain and go out 3/4 times a year. I wouldn't honestly say there is much difference in quality (even the smallest bake bread on site and have fresh meat & fish counters). Obviously the bigger ones like carrefour and eroski have a lot more choice and laid out completely self-service.. We like to support the smaller shops - definitely no more expensive, but you do need to speak a little spanish. Hope this helps.

There are a couple of large supermarkets in Benidorm. They stocked all the main brands with lots of spanish alternatives as well. They seemed to cost a bit more than they would over here.

If you're in Majorca and near Portals Nous you must go to Supermercado Cidon. Also in Majorca in Costa en Blanes is an English run supermarket called Nice Price and it stocks everything you can get here - however you do have to pay over the top prices, eg a packet of Seriously Strong cheese which costs a couple of quid in Asda costs �9.50!!!

Well I don't actually pay that price, I bulk buy in Asda then take it with me! My mother-in-law lives there and knows all the best places to shop - but you can't beat the old Warburtons loaf now can you!?

Having lived in Almeria for many years directly opposite a real Spanish bakery YES you certainly can beat a good old Warburtons loaf good as it is ! for supermarkets in Spain you will find Carrefour in most large towns and there are several other excellent French supermarket chains accross Spain but the smaller Spanish ones are usually excellent without the large price difference we have here.You will also find Aldi and Lidl in most places and they're often a bit cheaper.Try out your Spanish and use the local markets for really fresh food and a true Spanish experience at a reasonable price

I live in Greece and here we have lots of Spanish Supermarkets called DIA. Yhey are very good and I would say they are the equivalant to Aldi the German Supermarket.
