With the exception of some solids, yes, zips and buttonholes are permeable to toxins. In simple terms, liquid toxins will soak through and gaseous toxins will have no difficulty in passing through.

Do you have a particular group of toxins in mind?
Think of WWI where mustard gas (actually an oily liquid) would penetrate the leather soles of the soldiers boots.
No it sticks around and permeates

I am a little too young for this, however it came about that I had to test a gas mask (i e NOT during the WW2 but later) so we all trooped (haha) into the Nissen Hut where the ampoule was broken we were wearing our gas masks etc.

Then you had to go outside take off the mask and bawl your name, and got a lung full of the stuff

then in the car on the journey back, it came off your clothes

ON the srength of this, I have no doubt that it gets through zippers etc.
