Now they have painkilling gel etc, is there any suitable for earache as tablets are not very effective, and a local anaesthetic cream would be far more helpful. Does such a product exist, prescription or not?

I also know stuff to go in the ear has to be a different standard to on the skin so will be made only for that purpose. Far better than oral painkillers which spread through your whole body and don't address the place directly.
