What's the context of the question?

The Great Western Railway drivers sat on the right hand side of the cab. The other minor companies had the driver sitting on the left.
In a steam train, surely the driver must be on the left of the cab. Otherwise he would not be able to see the old-fashioned semaphore signals.
I'm trying to picture Casey Jones on the steam plate, pulling the cord for the whistle.

Must be getting old. I can't remember.
I am told it could be either side, depending on the engine ,but most of the time on left-hand side.
After speaking to an engine driver who worked on steam trains in his youth - he agrees with greavsie and Hazlinny - it was either side dependent on the company.
