Zetec v Duratec

Just wondering what the actual difference is between the Zetec and the Duratec engines, if any.

Wifes car has a 1.3 Duratec engine - heap of junk - totally underpowered - old 8 valve engine, whereas the Zetec I believe, is multi-valved.

Both engines are multi valved.

Zetec 8 valves. 2 valves per cylinder

Duratec 16 valves. 4 valves per cylinder.

Having 4 valves per cylinder allows more air and petrol in giving higher performance.

Both Zetec and Duratec include 8v and 16v variants within the range of 4-cylinder engines.

The original "Zeta" Zetecs (Zetec, Zetec-E, Zetec-R) were superseded by the heavily revised "Sigma" Zetecs (Zeta-SE, Zeta-Rocam), developed in collaboration with Mazda and Yamaha.

Sigmas in some small model Fords (Fiesta, Focus, Ka) were renamed as Duratec 8v. To add more confusion some Duratec 8v are actually Endura-E engines.

Larger 4-cylinder Duratecs were originally heavily revised Zetecs but were replaced in 2003 with Mazda MZR engines.

the 1.3 hcs doesnt come in a 16valve variant this is the old pushrod engine in the older escorts and fiestas (came in a 1.1 also. you had to go up to a 1.4 cvh for a 16 valve then 1.6 cvh. the more modern engines are zetec 1.25ltr 1.4ltr 1.6ltr 1.8ltr and 2ltr which are all 16 valve engines. the 1.3 duratec is an updated version of th eold 1.3hcs pushrod engine. all they really did was install an engine management system. still c r a p
