If the computer is located in a room with an extension telephone socket, is it possible that connecting the broadband modem to the main telephone socket and running an Ethernet cable from there to the other room will give higher speeds than plugging the broadband modem into the telephone extension?

Not unless there's something wrong with the connection between the main socket and the extension socket.
