I have heard from a reliable source that I have had an affair with a married man., giving lurid details. This couldn't be further from the truth. Is there anything I can do?

No. Rumours are best dealt with by ignoring them.
yes - laugh in their face
Definitely ignore it

Definitely do NOT go to Law, - very expensive for Slander, lots of people who bring actions for slander go bankrupt,
but you might threaten it once or twice
so long as you don't - sort of thing
Sleep with their husband.
