Memory Map grid references etc help pleasssssssse

Can anyone help. I have memory map v5 on my laptop . How do i use grid references on the goto feature - ive never used it before and I am trying to just get used to it. I understand the grid refs ( going back to my boy scout days) but what do the sy ny so etc stand for and how do I use them. Probably really obvious but I am thick on these matters. Also i have the full 7 maps installed and when trying to use the goto feature i enter what i thnk is the correct coordingate and then it zooms to a completely difeerent map what am I doing wrong? Are there any training materials that I can get?
