Do you count Saturday and sunday (for eg 30 days) or is it over 20 days (for eg five days per week x 4 weeks = 20 days)? Help!

However most will take the number of working days in that month, take the number of actual days you worked out in the month, and ratio the pay accordingly from the monthly amount.
But the 31st is Friday. So if he is monthly paid (and from your question it seems he is), he's surely been paid for 5 days last week and 5 days this week, up to Friday.
Monday was a public holiday, he did not work but gets paid.
Sounds right to me - many companies dole out the salary slips one day early. It's to allow wives to anticipate the spending potential a little early.

No! They told him he was paid for 10 days...then his wage slip said 8. So they gave him the rest in cash (naughty!). Next month he will get his full month but still no answer on this....I think it is down to the tax code (he seemed to pay an awful amount of tax for a small amount of pay) although his tax code is the same as last jobs.
