Are dead pools morally wrong? William Hill no longer take bets on when somebody is going to die.

Personally, I think a dead pool can be quite good fun and am thinking of running one at the Lodge for our 1Christmas charity fund.

If you could choose three to cark it for 2008 who would they be?

I think I would opt for:

1) Ian Brady (constantly on hunger strike)

2) Duke of Edingburgh, Prince Philip.

3) Joe Longthorne

I feel this may be in bad taste, but if for charity is it really that bad?

It doesn't have to be of natural causes, so War Crime executions etc would be valid. But I strongly advise against murder. It is highly illegal, and not nice.
You might be on to something re Prince Phillip, but as the others are already ill you might not be able to place bets...hmmm.

No I don't think it's that bad. It is, after all, a private venture.
They are known as a 'Tontine', and they are illegal, for obvious reasons. There is an excellent movie from a few years ago starring Peter Sellers and Michael Caine (amongst others) revolving around a tontine. In the UK the move was titled 'The Tontine, In the US it was released as 'The Wrong Box'. A hilarious movie!!
Can I join in and put an accumulater on??
What happens in the event that they dont actually die but slip into a coma and are kept alive by ventilators?

my 3 for 2008 would be:

1/ Robson Green
2/ Ruth Kelly MP
3/ Sir Ken ( so that Boris got a run at London Mayor :) )

Are they illegal???? I have never heard of them in case law.

Black Noir, I like you randomess, but do not think you will win.

Although if I get the go ahead, I will stick to my original I think Amy Winehouse is a good bet, listening to her parents. And maybe Eddie Kidd.
I just realized that I might be talking about a different kind of 'dead pool' than what Shadow Man is referring to. A tontine is an agreement between a group of (usually) rich men who each ante up a sizable chunk of cash which is then held in trust. The last man to remain alive collected all the cash plus interest!
I was going to suggest Amy Winehouse, along with Kerry Katona and Pete Docherty.
what about Brittany?
We used to run one down at the local pub. I've stopped doing them now...ruddy Queen Mother has cost me a fortune!!
