It's difficult to determine if it is oral history or a mythical Holy Man, but the story is my favorite, having worked with various Bands of the Tribe.
Here's a very brief discussion by a Cheyenne Chief of the Council of Forty Four. He is, I believe, also a memeber of the Bowstring Clan...

I love the old Welsh legend of Gelert. He has a shrine in North Wales which is now a popular place to visit. Details of the legend here: http://www.beddgelerttourism.com/legend_of_gel ert.htm
I like Odysseus.
Although there's one about a man who goes down to hades(I think) to get his wife back as he can not live without her. He gets his wish but he's not allowed to look back at her until they've left Hades and he's almost there but he just can't stop himself.... That one actually made me cry when I first read it. (I was 10 though).

I like urban myths, especially ones that we can see for ourselves i.e. the apparent suicide of a munckin on Wizard of Oz. I have seen it and I don't believe it, it looks like a bird to me.
I also remember myths such as the ghost in Three men and a baby.
Also if anyone has ever visited a childrens adventure camp in Wales called Llangrannog, the myth of the Black Nun was pretty good!
