what are typical p2p speeds

what is the typical download speed of p2p file shares, like kazaa, in real life. i have 700kbps cable internet downloading normally at 80kB/s, but so far the best i seem to get on kazaa[first days] is 20kB/s...that hardly seems worth pursuing if that's the best they can do

Im also getting a little fed up with the download speeds of KazaaLite.I use a 1mb broadband connection,but most of the time the download speed is below 20kbs.Im certainly no expert,but I beleive it might have something to do with bandwidth.Most of the files I download are very popular movie files,and if there are lots of people downloading the same file from the same users,then I assume the speeds would be lower due to only a certain amount of bandwidth being available.If I download a legal file from legitimate source, I get some amazing speeds and have even downloaded at 230kbs.Ive been told that it does not matter if you have a 50mb broadband connection because download speed is restricted by available bandwidth.Like I said,im no expert and I may be wrong.

If you have a fast connection then your download speed will be limited by the connection speed of the computer you are uploading from. A lot of people still use dial-up to access p2p services so your download speed will be affected by this.

Forget about kazaa and the like: BitTorrent is the way to go with P2P.

Google "BitTorrent" for more info.

You'll have to spend some time getting used to it, getting Torrent links etc, finding your favourite source for files and so on, but once you have done it's well worth it.

With all P2P software, you're speed is limited by those you download from. If you're downloading a particularly popular file from dozens or hundreds of users, their individual speeds become less of an issue and your aggregate speed will be very high. If you're downloading from one one or two users then you will find it much slower. Furthermore, performance of TCP network communications is dependent on traffic flow in both directions since it is a connection-oriented protocol - In plain english that means that if you let people upload from you as fast as your line will allow you'll see severe detriment in your ability to download. Since ADSL is the most common broadband technology, and is by definition slower in it's upstream bandwidth, most users also cap their P2P's software to limit its bandwidth usage, and therefore not swallow all their upstream bandwidth. In reality, expect a film to take a few days to download, and if fact, expect everything to take time: best rule of thumb is to have a large queue of downloads, limit yourself to only a handful of simultaneous downloads, and then as things come and go you'll find you have a constant stream of incoming material.
