Who came up with the phrase "Im having a whale of a time", also why? I think it would be more suitable to say "Im having a moth of a time. lol thanx xxxxxxx
This originated in the USA at the start of the 20th century, where 'whale' suggested anything especially big or anything especially good. For example, someone might have said: "I'm a whale on geography" to mean he was very knowledgeable in that subject. So, to have a whale of a time meant an especially good one.
